Doris Lewis Obituary

Doris Marie Lewis (Hood) was born on March 8, 1944, to the union of Jessie Alton Hood and Ceolar Beckworth. She lived a life centered around love, family, and caring for others. As the oldest of her siblings, she stepped into responsibility early, helping her mother raise the younger children. That caring, protective spirit stayed with her, her entire life.

She attended Mary C. Womack and later devoted her career to healthcare. Doris worked at Good Shepherd Medical Hospital and Highland Pines Nursing Home, where she took pride in helping and comforting others. Taking care of people wasn’t just her job – it was who she was.

Doris actively participated as a member of Galilee Baptist Church until her health declined, and she found joy in worship and fellowship. Her faith carried her through life’s joys and sorrows and was a steady foundation for her family.

Family meant everything to her. She was a proud and loving mother to her three sons. Bobby Ray, Darren, and Gary. She was also blessed with nine grandchildren including a very special great-grandson., Khyrian, who was truly the light of her life. Being “Big Mama” was one of her greatest honors, and she wore the title with pride. She was also a loyal and treasured friend, especially to her dear neighbors, who shared countless laughs and memories by her side.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ceolar & Clarence Bowie and Helen & Jessie Hood; two sons, Bobby Ray & Gary Lilly; one grandson, Zachary Lilly; three brothers, Horace Jean, Louis Charles, & Bobby Glenn Hood; and two sisters, Brenda & Linda Hood.

On February 4, 2026, Doris was called home to eternal rest. Her memory will live on through her son, Darren Lilly (Katherine); sisters, Nelvia (Thomas) Barnette, Mamie (Wilbert) Williams, Evelyn (Philbert) Peoples, Bobbie& Dorothy Hood, Helen “Annie” Smith; brothers, Willie Brooks, Jessie Ray, Raymond, Earnest, & Dery Hood, and a host of relatives and friends. Though our hearts are heavy, we are grateful for the love she poured into each of us. Her strength, warmth, faith, and legacy will live on through the many lives she touched.
