On July 7, 1948, in Longview, TX, Rev. Hal and Mrs. Herelene (Polk) Jackson welcomed a beautiful baby girl into the world, whom they named Bettye Louise Jackson.
From birth, Bettye was raised in the Lord, grounded in faith and guided by His word. Her father ensured that faith was a central part of their daily lives, keeping the family in church almost every day. Through life’s joys and challenges alike, Bettye held firm to her beliefs, never wavering in her trust in God and continually leaning on Him for strength, comfort, and direction.
Bettye attended high school at Mary C. Womack, where she met Eugene Thomas, who would later become the love of her life and her husband. Guided by her faith and a deep desire to walk in God’s purpose for her life, Bettye was determined to build a life of meaning and service. She graduated high school in 1966 and went on to attend Jarvis Christian College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Business. Answering God’s call to education and ministry, she later obtained a master’s degree in education and later earned her Doctorate in Divinity. In addition to her academic and spiritual pursuits, Bettye became a proud member of the illustrious Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, where she exemplified sisterhood, service, and Christian values.
Bettye faithfully served as an educator at Longview High School for over 30 years, dedicating her life to shaping young minds and impacting generations of students. Her commitment to service extended far beyond the classroom and was deeply rooted in her faith. Bettye was a devoted member of New Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where she faithfully served as a Sunday School teacher, choir member, Youth and Vacation Bible School Director, Prayer Leader and Mission Society member. She also volunteered as a Bible teacher and devotional leader at the Longview Juvenile Detention Center, House of Hope Women’s Shelter, as well as various assisted living facilities and nursing homes in and around Longview, sharing God’s Word and offering encouragement wherever she was led. In addition, Bettye served the Lord and His children through her involvement with East Mount Olive District Association, Texas Educational Baptist State Congress of Christian Education, and the National Baptist Convention, USA, answering the call to ministry in many capacities. Beyond her many acts of service, Bettye embraced God’s gift of exploration, finding joy in both travel and reflection. She traveled to more than 40 states across the nation, including Hawaii, and journeyed extensively abroad. Her travels took her to numerous countries, including England, France, Germany, Sweden, Mexico, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico. In 1985, she was blessed to visit Israel, the Holy Land, where she explored Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jericho, Nazareth, the Jordan River, and many other sacred sites. This meaningful pilgrimage held deep spiritual significance and further strengthened her faith and connection to God.
Bettye and Eugene were united in holy matrimony for more than 50 years before Eugene transitioned to his heavenly rest. She leaves to cherish her God-given legacy two children: a daughter, Thalia, and a son, Eugene Jr. (Tamara). Bettye was richly blessed with three grandchildren—a granddaughter, Tynetria (Daniel) and two grandsons, Christopher and Khamron. She also leaves three precious great-grandchildren, Nathaniel, Zoyah and Demetria, whom she loved dearly. In addition, she leaves to cherish her memory three beloved siblings: Shirley (Arnold), Hal Jr., and Edward (Carol); one cherished aunt, Lena Mae Jones; and a host of other relatives and friends whom she considered family.
Bettye’s life was a living testimony of faith, service, and love. She walked humbly with God, serving others wholeheartedly, and left a legacy that will continue through generations. Though she will be deeply missed, we rejoice in knowing that her work on earth is complete and her reward is secure. As scripture reminds us, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant… enter thou into the joy of thy Lord” (Matthew 25:23, KJV). Bettye has fought the good fight, finished her course, and kept the faith, and she now rests peacefully in the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
