Elvin Roy Crain, Sr. was born to parents James Carey Crain and Vera Effie Mitchell on July 31, 1935 in Longview, Texas. He attended Longview “Nego” High School, graduating in 1953.
An industrious gentleman, he had a varied work experience. He was employed by USI Steel for numerous years, and he spent a number of years in the dry cleaning business. During his younger years, he coached school baseball and football. He made good times of his spare time, engaging in playing dominoes with friends and working in his yard. (One year, he inadvertently planted a “bumper crop” of watermelons by spitting seeds into one of his flower beds.)
The elephants had nothing on him. His memory was remarkable. He remembered vividly everything that ever happened in Longview, Texas (and a few that didn’t). His friends and family relished the opportunity to chat with him about the good old days.
Elvin was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife and mother of his children: Delores McLemore; daughter: Chandra; infant son: Darrell; and three brothers: Wendell, Ennis and James.
Those left to cherish his memory his wife: Ethel; son: Elvin Roy, Jr. (Estelle) (Tucson, Arizona); and, three sisters: Dorothy Holloway (Beaumont, California), Mammie Brooks (Longview, Texas) and Carrie Gamble (Arthur) (Vista, California). Other survivors include a number of other relatives including one granddaughter: Monique Wells, her children/grandchildren; great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
