March 7, 1928 ~ January 18, 2024 (age 95) 95 Years Old
Irene Whitehurst was born on March 7, 1928 to Millie and Willie Jackson in Rusk County, TX, the 8th of 12 children. She attended Harmony Hill School.
Ms. Irene united in matrimony with John R. Brown in 1948 and from this union, 3 children were born. In 1955, she and her children migrated to California and settled in the Bay Area; first Vallejo and then Oakland.
Ms. Irene later met and married Willie Whitehurst in 1957 and from this union, two more children were born. She joined the New Light Baptist Church in Oakland, CA under the Pastorage of Rev. L. L. Hester where she was a member of the choir and mission. Some time later, Ms. Irene united with the Evergreen Baptist church under the Pastorage of Rev. J. L. Richards and later Rev. Frank Pinkard Jr.
She was employed with the US Postal Service Oakland from 1968 to 1973, she left to become a homemaker. Caring for her children and grandchildren was her strength! She also cared for her mother, until Ms. Mille was called home in 1998.
Ms. Irene migrated back to East Texas in 2001, settling in Longview where she joined Original Zion Hill Baptist Church in Tatum under the Pastorage of Rev. Bernard Gray. She was a member until her passing. Ms. Irene loved to sing with her sisters, daughters and nieces and would belt out an ol Baptist Hymnal or Gospel song at a moments notice. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and FISHING!! Ms. Irene shared her love of fishing with her grandchildren and even had them on the creeks and fishing banks in playpens! Keeping a watchful eye of course... Those children and grands became avid fishermen themselves. Ms. Irene sewed and made various garments for loved ones. She cooked and was a skillful baker as well, making cakes, pies, fried pies, biscuits, etc. Those meat loaves and pound cakes will surely be missed!
On Thursday, January 18, 2024 our Precious and Mighty God called Ms. Irene home. She was 95 years young.
