Deacon Johnnie “Gunna” Carter was born to Bill and Sarah Ann Carter in Upshur County Texas on July 2, 1936.
He attended school and was raised in the Lake Providence Community, where he acquired many of his skills and trades.
He joined Lake Providence Baptist Church in Gilmer, Texas at an early age. Deacon Carter served as a Deacon for Lake Providence for many years, before moving his membership to Friendship Baptist Church in Longview, Texas where the Rev. D. J. Nelson was his Pastor, and dear friend.
He was preceded in his journey to be with the Lord by his father, Willie Bill Carter; mother, Sarah Ann Carter; sisters Norma Joyce Carter, Mattie Pearl Carter; brothers, Aubrey Carter Sr., L. C. Carter, Harmon Carter, Sergeant Ozell Carter, Franklin D. Roosevelt Carter, Willie Carter.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 27 years, Carol D. Carter, his children Johnnie Carter Jr. (Dusty), Jennifer (Henry) Jackson, Zettie Carter, Tameggie (Derrick) Jones-Carter- Meshan, and step-daughters Shaune Pippins, and Ursula (William) Smith. He also leaves as host of Grandchildren, Great-Grandchildren, Nieces, and Nephews who will miss him dearly.
