Roger Earl Byrdsong was born on October 4, 1954, in Gregg County, Texas, to Marvin and Essie Byrdsong. He was the youngest of five children whom everyone loved and adored.
Roger’s early education began at Carthage Elementary and continued through middle school before transferring to Longview ISD, where he graduated from Longview High School in 1973.
Roger accepted Christ as his personal Savior at an early age at Antioch Church of Christ in Panola County. Later in life, he became an active and devoted member of Union Church of Christ, where he not only professed his love for Jesus but lived it daily through his actions and service. He faithfully served as a Sunday School teacher, led numerous Wednesday night Bible classes, and was a dedicated member of the Men’s Midday Prayer Call, where he often served as the facilitator.
Roger dedicated more than 20 years of service to the City of Easton Gas and spent 32 years with Texas Eastman, where he excelled as a General Foreman. After a long and fulfilling career marked by hard work and commitment, he retired from Texas Eastman in October 2022.
He had a deep passion for classic cars and could often be found working on his old-school rides. He was also an avid sports fan who loved cheering for the Dallas Cowboys and faithfully supported his hometown teams: The Longview Lobos and The Tatum Eagles.
Roger met Opal, on March 29, 1999. Their bond grew into a beautiful union, and they were joined in marriage on April 4, 2010.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Marvin Sr. and Essie Byrdsong, and his sisters, Othello Horton and Mary Woodard.
Roger leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Opal; three daughters, Roshyia Byrdsong Dotrey of Longview, TX, RoNishia Byrdsong of Lewisville, TX, and Tonia Mayfield of Dallas, TX; and two bonus daughters, LaQuetta Starling of Longview, TX, and Kartrice Butler (Jessie) of Easton, TX. He is also survived by his brothers, Marvin Jr. and Johnny (Kerneatha); eleven grandchildren: Chris II and Crissalyn Dotrey, Tysha and Tykia Evans, Brianna Taylor, Jachais and Christopher Jenkins, JaMyah and Jamarion Butler, MaKenley Mack, and Brannon Strong and six great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends who will miss him dearly.
