Yolanda Laverne Gillaspie, a retired professional cook and resident of Henderson, Texas, passed peacefully December 6, 2020 at the age of 71.
She was born to Melvin and Jeneatta Johnson, nee Wright, on December 11, 1948 in Henderson, Texas. She accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior early in her life as a member of the Harris Chapel Church of Christ where she continued to worship after returning to the area after retirement. Laverne is survived by her children Tammie Gillaspie, Donald Gillaspie, grandson, Cayden Harris, brother, Melvin Wright, and sisters, Frances Koledoye and Sandra Parker. She is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Walter Lee Gillaspie and parents, Melvin Wright Sr. and Jeneatta Johnson, nee Wright. She also enjoyed spending time with a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins who treasure the moments they shared. Her precious grandson, Cayden, was the apple of her eye and twin in so many ways. They loved spending as much time together as possible.
While growing up between Mayflower, Texas and Saginaw, Michigan, she met a young man from a neighboring community, Walter Lee, and they started what would be a loving and enduring marriage. On a mission to strike out on their own, Laverne and Walter Lee moved to Dallas where both of their children were born. They resided in the Dallas area for over 40 years. While in Dallas, Laverne began a career in service as she blessed customers and clients with her culinary skills. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed sharing her gift with others.
Laverne was a fervent child of God who was quick to hear, slow to speak, and even slower to anger. She preferred spending time with her family and when she did, her melodic laughter rang out freely. She was a kind and gentle soul who was always there to lend a helping hand.
After retiring, Walter Lee and Laverne felt a strong desire to reconnect with their East Texas roots and ultimately decided to return to their origins in Henderson, TX. Laverne Gillaspie’s life was a gift, her memory a treasure, she was loved beyond words and will be missed beyond measure.
